This is a property that Jennifer and I are so proud to have been chosen to represent.  It is the most beautiful Chambre d’Hôtes at the moment, but could equally be a stunning, large family home.  It is – literally – Award Winning.  The garden, which is truly magical, won the Best Garden in Ariege Award and the property itself was chosen from a host of others to be the featured property in the French “Glossy” magazine ESPRIT d’ICI.  We are delighted to email the article and photos to prospective buyers.  Guest comments are also available – all glowing.

This property is the stuff of dreams.  ” Location, location, location ” well, definitely yes.  The combination of Lac de Montbel 5 minutes away, Pyrenean mountain views and a delightful little hamlet are hard to beat, and the major renovation undertaken by the current owners is, frankly, stunning – combining elegant simplicity with rural chic in a brilliant way.  Top quality throughout, yet warm and welcoming, this translation of an old farmhouse into a rural paradise is a delight from the moment you enter the gardens.

Within the property the owners have taken their palette from the Farrow and Ball experts.  Subtle colours, light and airy and totally keyed to the age and beauty of the building.  Each Chambre d’Hôte suite has its own distinctive style, yet links with the overall vision with no jarring notes.  It’s a wonderful mixture of old French furniture, handmade textiles, providing notes of colour in each suite, and a sparkling en suite in every room.  All the rooms are generous, and the furnishings are crisp, stylish but in no way daunting or sterile, it is utterly charming in every way.

From the country kitchen, the linked open fronted barn gives the ideal place to dine, with a huge old bread table with carved benches fronting the courtyard garden.  Seating areas are dotted around the garden, the choice of sun or shade, the ability to chose your favorite view, to decide whether to be surrounded by the perfume of the old white rose sprawling happily up the barn or to seek a quiet nook of shade with a good book… seriously wonderful and wonderfully designed.

The hamlet is nested in the forested hills above Lac de Montbel, and was rescued some thirty years ago from rural decrepitude.  Since then, although it hasn’t grown in size, it has gone from strength to strength, with like minded people loving the lifestyle here.  Our photos were taken on the 6th of December, we don’t know if this hamlet has a microclimate – but it certainly felt like it.  Jennifer and I were totally spoilt by the current owners, fragrant coffee and homemade cookies, sitting at the old bread table… bliss.  We really, really did not want to leave.

Amazingly, there is still potential to develop further.  As you face the property, to your left there is a door which leads into another barn area and two seriously large spaces at ground floor level.  Currently used as a workshop and store area – complete with a massive bread oven in the space to the rear of the property – this could become an independent gite or further extend living space.  There is also space to one of the guest areas to expand to a further room, thus giving generous ” family ” accommodation to an already large Chambre d’Hôte suite.

We utterly love this property.  For us it’s got everything: location, the lake virtually on your doorstep, bustling little Chalabre 10 minutes away, a stunning, sensitively developed property with utterly magical gardens.  Jennifer and I both said, ” I could live here and be happy ” and we both really meant it.  If this is the lifestyle you’ve been looking for, come visit … and make your dreams become reality!
