Fabulous location, a tiny, one way road fronting the smallest of Chalbre’s three rivers, only a minutes walk to the centre of Chalabre, yet a part of the village that has a total “country ” feel to it. The same family have lived in this property for four generations, and the property has always been loved and well maintained. There was a family tradition of working with stone, and the stone masons were always part of the “aristocracy” of the artisans, having served apprenticeships for years to learn their skills. It is possible that this trained eye and friendships with other skilled workers influenced the family’s choice of experts to work on their own property. Jennifer and I do know that they have only ever used skilled artisans who are referred to as ” Serioses ” people who have the skills, the training and the pride in their work to produce a truly first class result.
From the front of this property you have no idea of the scale – nor does it give you a clue about the outside space – which is gorgeous. As you enter, the first surprise is that the elegant staircase is to the left and in the centre of the house, seriously sensible as it totally stops the current of air that most of us get the moment we open the front door. The staircase also divides the sitting / dining room to the front of the house from the generous kitchen to the rear of the house – and from the kitchen – the garden. Step out of the kitchen and you are immediately on a large terraced area, an iron gazebo supports a scramble of wisteria that will give you shade for outdoor dining. To your right are the two workshops where stone was worked. They could continue their use as workshops but, equally, they could become fabulous garden accommodation – they are both large enough to turn into studios – and have a paved area to the front and side. And there is more – from the terrace to your right is a slightly raised area with a fig tree centred on the lawn – if a swimming pool appeals to you this could be the perfect place to site it – close enough to the house to be practical and an ideal adjunct to the terrace. To the left behind the terrace is the flower garden – mature planting – and, even further down the garden, steps up to form another terrace that has been used as the vegetable garden and is bisected by the path to the back garden door. The whole garden is enclosed by stone walls, private, sheltered, utterly delightful. Perhaps best of all there is a huge garage / workshop to the rear of the property – and we do mean ” huge “. The garage opens on to the little square behind the property – there could perhaps be the possibility to turn this into yet more accommodation if you do not want to use it as a garage / workshop.
Returning to the property… it is a stone built house, hence cool in summer and easy to heat in winter. The walls are thick enough to turn into window seats in all the bedrooms – and all four bedrooms have the charm of the old married to modern practicality. All generously sized. There is central heating, and also a seriously functioning log fire in the ground floor front room. The views to the rear of the house are of the church steeple, backed by the hills… real country living… and the whole house is full of charm. Jennifer and I both had an attack of the “I could live here’s” This is a smashing property and we both recommend it unreservedly – the icing on the cake is the garden, allied to the exterior buildings that could open up a huge range of possibilities – a wonderful Chambre d’Hotes, a wonderful flexible family home with bags of space, a family home with gîtes to rent off the garden, anything you can imagine. Super ” best of both worlds ” location, quiet yet totally easy pedestrian access to all that Chalabre can offer and with the little river – never been known to flood – burbling away as you cross the iron bridge from the village centre. Come visit and be as enchanted as we are!
