So Jennifer and I swept into the drive and parking area at the front of the property – and our first impression was that a landscape gardener must live here – gorgeous planting to the front facade of the property and to all the perimeters of the generous parking area. Everything is immaculate, everything is in tip top condition, there are no direct neighbours and the views across to the craggy hills and rolling countryside are stunning. The owner assured us that the garden was hardly any work because she had chosen the plantings carefully and that the pool was where she preferred to spend her time – we could see why!!! The property is in a small village, seriously pretty, but is only 10 minutes by car from Quillan which has every shop and service that you could need – great combination of rural peace and calm but close to a town for the practical things.
As we stepped through the front door, our second impression was that this is a property where all you would need to do is bring your suitcases…. To your right is a brand new designer kitchen – with a cleverly thought out high bar area linking to the main living area / great room, allowing whoever is cooking to still be part of social events. The working area of the kitchen is sited behind the bar area hence hiding any work in progress on the cooking front – brilliant idea…. the main living/ great room is vast, very light and airy thanks to the cathedral ceiling with exposed beams and the wall of french windows leading out onto the terrace to the rear of the property.
Like the landscaping everything is immaculate, everything has been thought out so carefully… everything is utterly top of the range – from the genuine bamboo floors throughout the property (easy maintenance, durable, yet softer and warmer than tile) to the roofed terrace leading to the swimming pool, to the 25 Kilowatt wood burner that will heat the whole house if you prefer not to put the central heating on… double glazed and well insulated – this property is as practical as it is beautiful. Fully connected to excellent internet as well as French and British cable television… just drop your suitcase and get living!
Another well thought out design concept are the two bedroom wings – to your right from the main living / dining area is the master bedroom suite and the first guest bedroom. In the master suite, the french windows leading to the terrace and pool area just invite you to head for a morning swim…. and the dressing room and full bathroom complete the picture… every detail top notch. The guest bedroom is large and light filled and includes an en suite shower room. There is even a separate laundry room cunningly tucked away off the corridoor leading to the first guest bedroom. At the opposite side of the great room is the second guest bedroom… light and bright with french windows opening onto the terrace… also with an en suite shower room.
Finally, the garden – it is so beautiful that it would sit well at the Chelsea Flower Show in London … it surrounds the property…. areas planned and planted with an expert eye and loving care…. each area has its own identity, and every season of the year will bring colour to delight your heart… And although a garden this beautiful may appear to be a daunting task, it all was designed to be easy up keep… a garden to relax in not slave over! Next to the swimming pool is a pool house / studio that can double as extra accommodation … it only qualifies as a ” pool house ” as it houses the machinery… the original owners lived in here while the property was being built, and almost certainly had a seriously nice time!
Behind the formal garden, separated by a hedge with a flower and shrub border, is the orchard area… lawned and with a variety of fruit trees…. hidden at the side of the house is the vegetable plot… and then beyond the orchard is the surprise…. a 1000 sq metre building plot with water / sewer / electric connections already added. Another wonderful feature of this plot is that the gentle slope to the land at the rear of the property would ensure that the addition of a second property would not affect your enjoyment of the home and garden that already exists. Equally possible… the 1000 sqm could enlarge your garden/ allow for a tennis court/ give you the space to keep animals – it can be whatever you want it to be.
Jennifer and I both feel that this is a super property… no work to do at all, a beautiful example of design that marries inside and outside into one harmonious flow… top quality materials used throughout and a home that, like its current owner, has warmth and great charm…. the scope to add value by further developing the property is the icing on the cake.. gorgeous home, 3000sq metres of land, 1000sq metre buildable plot, no vis a vis, and only just over an hour from the Mediterranean and 40 minutes to the nearest airport and train station…. it really has got it all!
