One of the most beautiful houses we represent, in a dream of a setting.  If you approach this hamlet from Puivert you’ll see it nestling in a fold of green hills, tucked away as though time had forgotten it.  Twenty years ago this fabulous property was in desperate need of some tender loving care and it has been incredibly lucky to have had owners who have taken it, loved it, improved it, updated it, yet kept the magical feeling of this glorious property.

Originally the bar/restaurant/hotel of the tiny village, the very old members of this friendly, close knit community remember its warmth, and that it was a part of the Resistance during World War 2.  Young men and women met their loves – married – and were then separated by war.  It really was like the films.  If a candle was in one window it was safe, in another, not.  These walls could tell such stories….

Now it is totally magical; seamlessly mixing the old with the new.  The wonderful kitchen, leading to a vast dining room, the elegance of the en-suites serving the bedrooms, the library niched on a generous landing, and the fabulous apartment at the top of the property with its own terrace looking out over the hills.  Essentially divided into four suites, this property and its adjoining barn have been skillfully renovated to create an amazingly flexible space – ideal to run a gîte project or Chambre d’Hotes – whilst having owners accommodation that is totally luxurious.  Equally ideal  to have it as a wonderful family home, which could welcome seriously large family gatherings and never feel stretched or strained.

One of the major improvements was the work undertaken to link the garden to the house by a terrace with stairs leading from the huge, sunny, dining room.  Accessed previously via the cellars, they now hold the unlovely but practical elements – oil tank for the central heating and other necessities – far better.  Another huge improvement was the conversion of the attached barn into usable space, now offering a workshop at ground floor with a library and collection space above – the whole providing a totally independent second building but with access from the top floor, which if you were thinking of Chambre d’Hotes etc would be just so practical.

This really is a very special property.  From the moment you see the original wooden double door, step into the generous entrance hall and look up at the gentle curve of the stair sweeping upwards, we think you will be enchanted.  You really must visit to appreciate all the joys it offers.  We recommend this property unreservedly – it’s a total gem, we both utterly adore it and I promise you that we don’t say that lightly.
