She had us at hello… It wasn’t just the delicate beauty of the flowers tucked into every corner of the front garden, nor the delicate greenery winding its way up the front facade, or even the superb craftsmanship of the door and its fanciful, original period hardware… we think we fell in love with the “idea” of what we’d find inside!  If the owners took even half as much time with the interior as they had done with this small introduction to their home… we knew we were in love… and we were well rewarded!

We were welcomed into a classic double entry with gorgeous original tiled floors and beautiful polished wood doors with stained glass panes and wrought iron fittings… but it was the magnificent, curved staircase at the end of the hall that drew our eye.  It is the type of stair that welcomes you… and that brides dream of descending on their big day!  This indeed confirmed our thinking that the current owners love this house and have treated her with care throughout their life here.  Everything glowed with their attention to detail.  They have managed to retain the original iron banister with decorative fittings and the gorgeous blown glass ornament atop the newel post at the bottom.  True to form, the gracious center hall gives onto formal rooms at the front with the more casual spaces to the rear.

The current owners decided to create one long room to the right of the hall that runs from front to rear of the main house.  It is anchored by an impressive stone fireplace that is tall enough for a small adult to stand in.  Opening up this space was a wonderful idea, as light floods in from the windows in front and all along the long wall.  Currently used as a dining room, the owner’s generous farm table – that can easily seat 10 or 12 – fits perfectly with additional cozy seating in front of the fire.

To the left of the center hall, the formal salon practically brings the outside in… with tall windows facing front and beautiful french doors leading into the side garden.  And what a garden… any keen reader’s image of a secret garden come to life!  The house abuts the ancient chapel in this lovely little town, and so the garden connecting the two properties is entirely enclosed by the original ancient stone wall.  Curving around to follow the lines of this wall, the garden reveals itself piece by piece… a summer kitchen and dining area leads onto an open space that the current owners have filled with flower beds and small flowering trees.  Beyond that, via a small arch is another garden that could easily hold a spa or even a swimming pool.  It would be the ultimate in privacy!

Completing the loop leads you back to the kitchen which has been outfitted for the most passionate of cooks.  Generous counters and storage space combined with top quality fittings.  Easily the kitchen for people who love to entertain!

Back to the center hall and up the curved stair… it truly is a work of art.  The original curved wall into which the staircase is built is the perfect canvas for an art collection and the comfortable rise of the steps encourages you to take your time.  With its tall ceilings on each floor, this is a blessing indeed!  The first floor landing gives onto 2 generous bedrooms with en suite baths and an additional room that would make a lovely dressing room or small office.  The second floor has an additional 4 large bedrooms all with en suite baths plus an office area.  Truly, this home would make a wonderful Chambre d’Hotes if one wished.  Certainly, guests will be beyond comfortable with generous rooms and lots of privacy.

Back on the RDC, we were led through the charming original wooden door behind the staircase into an astoundingly large garage and workroom space… 130sqm.  You could easily fit 2 or even 3 cars in this space.  The most amazing part is the loft that was built above this space… completely open to the peaked room with multiple windows and skylights to bring in the light.  A completely separate apartment could easily be built here, it is that large, but it could also make for a wonderful artists studio or family recreation / games room.  An absolute coup as an investment!

In sum, we fell in love with this charming home and know that it is a wonderful investment for anyone wanting a large, gracious family home or anyone who is looking to run a profitable Chambre d’Hotes business.  With the added bonus of the garage and loft space, the value can’t be beat.  The village is quaint with its collection of well kept period properties, yet is with 15 minutes of Narbonne and only a bit further to the beaches.  A secret garden paradise!
