Entrancing property in one of the prettiest ski villages in our region….and not only ski, it’s a mecca for all winter sports plus some of the most beautiful scenery and countryside you can imagine. Eagles, Pyreneean vultures and buzzards wheel overhead…in spring it’s a mass of wildflowers, butterflies and wildbirds and walking or biking here is an utter joy. To get a true picture have a quick look at the opening sequences of ” Belle et Sebastien ” – fabulous film anyway – but the opening is just so like this area.
Jennifer is our ski fan, speaking personally, warmth and excellent heating are subjects dear to my heart. This property is brilliant. It’s only the second property we’ve seen with a ” mass oven” – a wonderful, huge, economical woodburner, nearly as tall as I am, and its capacity to heat efficiently and economically is why it’s used in seriously cold Northern European countries – think Norway in the depths of winter. This one is state of the art and is also very beautiful. This choice of stove gives you a clue as to how the current owners have chosen to go for quality – the work that they have done to this property is stunning – intelligently planned, and a wonderful mix of modern open concept married to rural chic.
As you enter you immediately look right to the huge living area, focal point the mass stove, to your left a true “Country kitchen” – stylish, well planned and seriously pretty, with plenty of space for dining / entertaining. Jennifer and I also adored the decision to keep, and use, two staircases – the first, leading up from the kitchen, leads to a master suite, the second – from the vast living area – leads to family/ guest bedrooms and bathroom. The two “night time” areas can interconnect, so flexibility has been maintained.
Outside space is amazing too – when we first visited we were welcomed by two inquisitive horses who walked over to introduce themselves. Both are in happy retirement after spending their lives working as “theatrical” horses at the medieval spectacles that are so much a part of this area. Their ability to “strike a pose” has stayed with them, andhock deep in wild flowers, they looked wonderful. Plenty of grazing fields to support whatever animals you choose or the possibility to have a garden that would be park sized – and all with the most breathtaking views in all directions. The land directly around the property itself has been terraced and gardened, surrounding this gorgeous property with easily maintained outside space.
If you do love winter sports this is possibly the perfect property – you could look out of your windows, see the slopes and decide what to do for the day. Access to the slopes is within easy distance and there is a rumour that the ski lifts that ran from the centre of the village may be reinstated. If this does happen it would mean that you could be “boots on” in a matter of minutes. The village is charming with its General Store and there is a good restaurant – Le Marmite – right in the village. For a major shop pop down to Foix, the County Town of the Ariege, or Ax Les Thermes – with a brilliant market. Lots of shops, restaurants, cafe/bars and a charming place to wander around – the “old town”directly below the Chateau in Foix is particularly beautiful.
Jennifer and I both feel that this is a super buy, generous property, beautifully renovated, lots of land, and a very realistic price all in a location that will take your breath away. Plan your visit today!
